DIN Standards Committee on Product Properties (NSM)

General

The DIN Standards Committee on Product Properties (NSM) is in charge of the standardization of product properties and rules for creating, testing and clearing for use of standardized product properties and classes.
The objective is to standardize unique cross-industry properties for the supply chain within and without companies.
In NSM standards which are based on international data models and standards the basic principles for the development and operation of the DIN Properties Dictionary (www.DINsml.net) are defined and guidance for operating the corresponding server is given.

The standardization of product properties and property lists/application classes in the topic fields of building construction, means of measurement, assembly tools for screws and nuts, abrasive tools, gearing tools, tools and tool holders is also performed by NSM.

The following series of DIN standards on product properties are available at present:

  • DIN 4000 "Tabular layouts of properties" containing 120 parts,
  • DIN 4001 "CAD standard parts file - Specification of geometry and parameters" containing 3 parts and
  • DIN 4002 " Properties and their scopes for product data exchange" containing 8 published parts.

In 2008 the development of the series of standards DIN 4003 „Configuration of 3D-Models“ was initiated.

DIN Properties Dictionary – www.DINsml.net

In addition to the development of the series of standards mentioned above the DIN Standards Committee on Product Properties is developing the DIN Properties Dictionary (www.DINsml.net).

DINsml.net is an industry-spanning online dictionary of product properties providing standardized product properties, classes and property lists throughout the product's entire life cycle.
DIN Properties Dictionary is based on the information models of ISO 13584 "Industrial automation systems and integration - Parts library" and IEC 61360 "Standard data element types with associated classification scheme for electric components" and conforms to the DIN 4002 standards series.

Using standardized properties and classes reduces the complexity of many business processes, like e.g. the data exchange of product and catalogue data between manufacturer and supplier.
